Preserving Heritage • Building Community • Empowering Futures
The Kulala (also known as Moolya/Handa) community of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, Kasaragod district of Kerala, and nearby regions is traditionally associated with the Kumbara caste and the occupation of pottery. For generations, they lived in remote villages with easy access to raw materials for their craft.
However, with modernization and the increasing use of steel, aluminum, and plastic utensils, the demand for clay pots declined significantly. This forced many community members to shift to other occupations, leading to migration to urban centers like Bengaluru in search of employment and business opportunities.
In Bengaluru, migrants established the Dakshina Kannada Kulala Sangha (R) over fifty years ago to promote social and educational upliftment. Its initiatives included scholarships for economically weaker students, support for those in distress, preservation of cultural traditions, and overall community welfare. In 1993, a similar organization, Kulala Samaja Bengaluru (R), was formed with comparable objectives. Both functioned as voluntary, non-profit organizations serving the community.
Recognizing their common goals, the two organizations merged on 24.11.2019, following due legal process and consultations with stakeholders. The unified body is now known as Kulala Sangha Bengaluru (R).
The Sangha operates on the principles of “Saralathe” (simplicity), “Samanathe” (equality), “Sanghatane” (unity), and “Samajaseve” (social service). With over 2,000 members in Bengaluru, it includes entrepreneurs, businesspersons, and professionals from both government and private sectors.
Registered under the Karnataka Registration of Associations Act, the Sangha functions as per its approved bylaws, with accounts audited annually. Its activities are managed by an elected President, Office Bearers, and Executive Committee. Dedicated sub-groups—such as the Women’s Wing, Youth Wing, Cultural, Sports, Education, and other committees—actively support its initiatives.
Through these efforts, Kulala Sangha Bengaluru (R) continues to promote the social, educational, and economic advancement of the community.
The Sangha has established two key funds: “Vidya Nidhi” to support education and “Jeeva Nidhi” to assist members in distress.
Each year, the Sangha undertakes various initiatives, including:
In November 2022, the organization celebrated its momentous 50th Anniversary (Suvarna Mahotsava), marking half a century of dedicated service to the community. Under the blessings of the revered Swamiji from Mahalakshmi Kshetra Sri Dhama, Manila, the Sangha continues to grow and serve.
